Congratulations on making the decision to learn a new language! It’s a great way to broaden your horizons and connect with people from different cultures. Your goal is to gain fluency in your target language so you can communicate with others effectively. Additionally, you’re eager to explore new opportunities for entertainment, such as books, podcasts, music, and movies in your chosen language. With your passion, motivation, and positive attitude, you’re ready to get started.

Now that you’re motivated, you might be wondering how to begin your language learning journey. What are the most effective ways to acquire a new language? In this article, we will provide you with four techniques that will help you get started on the right path toward speaking and understanding your target language more fluently. Let’s take a look.

Listen to and read in your target language regularly

One of the fundamental ways to improve your language skills is to expose yourself to your target language regularly. However, some language learners do not spend enough time on this crucial step and end up feeling frustrated when they cannot communicate effectively. In order to enhance your long-term comprehension and expand your passive vocabulary, it is essential to immerse yourself in your target language consistently. Watching movies, listening to podcasts and music, reading books and articles, and using your phone in the target language can help you achieve this. Although, at first, you may not understand everything, you will still be exposed to the language and absorb its nuances.

The primary benefit of regular immersion is that it enables you to identify grammatical structures, common phrases, intonation, and pronunciation of your target language when listening. Additionally, using authentic materials can provide insight into the cultural context of your target language. If you find the materials too challenging, try using resources that are closer to your current level. Keep in mind that you should not expect to understand everything. The complete comprehension is not the primary objective of immersion; rather, your goal is to facilitate active language learning. As you continue to immerse yourself in the language, you will gradually understand more and improve your ability to communicate in your target language.

Read out loud

Speaking your target language, even when alone, can significantly impact your language learning progress. Just as exercising is necessary to strengthen muscles, speaking is crucial to improve your speaking skills. You can also benefit from websites that provide audio and text materials, like Bino Academy 😊, to hear the proper pronunciation and the flow of the language. By listening, pausing, and re-reading sections, you can improve your understanding at your own pace. As you progress to a higher level of fluency, you may not need to listen and read simultaneously. Instead, you can choose books and articles that fit your interest and read them aloud. This practice is particularly valuable when you do not have a language partner to practice speaking with.

Some may feel uncomfortable reading out loud, but it’s essential to step outside your comfort zone and embrace the practice. This technique leads to our third suggestion.

Listen and mimic

Yes! Listen and mimic. This technique ties back to immersion, where you expose yourself to the target language by listening to podcasts, movies, videos, and TV shows. Take breaks to repeat what people say and how they say it. You can also listen to music, learn the lyrics, and sing along with enthusiasm. With the help of the internet, you can find lyrics to almost any song in the world for free. So why not use this resource to your advantage?

If you’re interested in mimicking someone’s speaking style, such as Bino 😎, maybe because you appreciate his voice or want to acquire his specific accent, find someone you can understand and use as a role model for your own speech. Try to replicate their pronunciation and intonation to the best of your ability. While you may not sound exactly like the person you’re mimicking, this exercise will provide a solid foundation for you to develop your speaking skills by honing your word stress, pronunciation, sentence intonation, and overall feel for the language.

Don’t just learn words – learn sentences

While memorizing verb charts may be useful in learning vocabulary, it may not necessarily improve your ability to speak and write. Understanding that “spoke” is the past tense of “speak” is helpful, but it is way more practical to use it in a sentence like “I spoke to my brother this morning.”

It’s important to remember that language needs context. A word or phrase on its own is like a puzzle piece that is incomplete without its adjoining parts. Therefore, it’s crucial to use the word in a context that makes sense and that you can easily remember. If you prefer using flashcards or vocabulary notebooks, try reviewing full sentences that you would actually use in a given context instead of individual words. For instance, if you’re learning English and trying to master some collocations with the word “go”, instead of just saying “go home”, you could create a sentence such as “I’m going home right after work.” By putting the puzzle pieces together, you will be able to see the big picture more clearly

These are four techniques that we, at Bino Academy, believe are “must-do” for every language learner. Thank you for reading and listening! We’ll see you next week. Peace!
